I feel it would be beneficial to give an honest review of the Spokane South Hill YMCA (without worrying about “social correctness”). There are many positives about this gym. Some of them are: All the employees are very nice. They will greet you with a smile and be responsive to your questions and needs. They take good care of the equipment. Their repair vendor seems to be timely with the repairs. The gym is clean. They provide periodic free snacks and coffee (though the type of snacks may contradict your pursuit of health). There are also a number of negatives: This used to be a Gold’s Gym. It is smaller than other YMCAs and provides less amenities (no basketball gym, no pool, no hot tubs). The spas in the locker rooms are tiny and do not warm up to the normal level of heat used in a spa. And yet strangely, the price is the same as the YMCAs with full services. Because it is small, the machines are too close together. It can be difficult to wipe down an elliptical if there are people on both sides of you. Some of the weight exercise machines are so close together and facing each other that it feels like you are on top of each other. There are silly signs throughout the gym (with pictures) showing what type of shirts and shorts are appropriate. They must have been developed in the 50’s. They are very outdated and nobody follows the restrictions. Women and men wear tank tops that violate the illustrations. The signs need to be removed because they are ridiculous guidelines and nobody enforces them (thankfully). The parking lot is a nightmare. There is a popular coffee stand in the parking lot. Cars line up in both directions blocking the entrances and exits off of 57th. On Sundays, the gym doesn’t open until 9 am (late for industry standards). Recently, more homeless have been appearing in the area and hanging out on the east side of the building. Finally, the elephant in the room. Sometimes, it is best to be direct – this is a geriatric gym. The vast majority of members are seniors. Now, I am no spring chicken (to say the least), but I feel it is important for potential customers to realize this before joining. There are several ramifications: People move SLOWLY. There are narrow walking areas when you are checking in and walking around. It is not uncommon to find yourself behind someone who has a difficult time walking. You will need to be very patient. Most classes are designed for the elderly. There are not enough classes for more energetic clients. If you are motivated by being around a mix of highly energetic people, this is not the place for you. As mentioned before, there are no kid-based exercise activities (though there is a daycare room for parents who need help with their children). This is NOT a kid’s gym (ironic for a YMCA). I cannot emphasize this enough. The fact that is a geriatric gym can be considered a “5” for some, and a “1” for others. I am glad there are gyms like this for the elderly, but I believe it is important for this to be considered before choosing this as your gym. I was curious to find out why this was primarily a geriatric gym. From what I can gather, the gym accepts payments from Medicare Advantage Part C programs, so the gym is free for those elderly who are covered.

My favorite Y in the area by far. The staff is so nice and does a lot to build community. I love that it’s small and exclusively a gym space. There’s lots of machines and free weights which makes it easy to get through my workouts without having to wait.

I can't say enough good things about this YMCA! While it may be on the smaller side, it's packed with everything you need for a great experience. The staff are all incredibly friendly and professional, making every visit a pleasure. The child watch service is exceptional—my toddler always have a fantastic time and are well cared for while I enjoy my workout. Parking is never an issue, which is such a relief compared to other gyms. Overall, I love coming here. It’s a welcoming and well-managed facility that really feels like a community hub. Highly recommend!

Awesome gym for people with families, kids. The dress code is appropriate 👌 not like other gyms where people wear next to nothing. If you have more then one person in your family, this one for you. Kinda sucks they don't have deals for single people, too expensive. Great people sauna is low in heat tho. Great amount of options on there weights section, small amount of room for stretching. Would be nice if they added more pace to sit for kids when they wait on parents lol. All In all 8 out of 10. Then this ymca the only place that is kids friendly
