If you are Buffalo and a Tourist or a Fishing buff or a History student you couldn't miss this place. Located next to the Peace Bridge, approachable by road from I190, is this beautiful park on the Unity island. It can be your perfect Spot to capture the Niagara river or the Peace Bridge. Or just enjoy your Fishing hobby in company of other fishing enthusiasts. Or else soak in the historic significance of the "Underground Railway" movement of freedom seeking slaves of the 19th Century, as this was the jetty for the Black Rock ferry.
Lots of construction going currently going on in the area. Many cars in the lots and people were in the cars. We felt very unsafe and uncomfortable walking around the area. Great view, but not an area I would recommend anyone to go or hangout.
I LOVE this park. You are able to park Very close to the mighty Niagara River, directly across from Fort Erie Ontario, Canada. It is just to the side of the Peace Bridge to Canada. It is a lovely park where there are occasional activities all summer, live music, family fishing days, picnic tables and a path right next to the water. There are always people here, many who like me park and just enjoy watching the river flow. When I was working in downtown Buffalo NY, I would often bring my lunch here and frequently came after work to just decompress. Many fish here and pull huge fish of many varieties from the waters. I have friends, in a scuba club, who come and dive here. Many walk their leashed dogs here and there are often children playing, enjoying the outdoors. The sunsets exquisite, Gorgeous for unknown reasons and I have personally taken award winning photographs of them. There is a bridge, over the Buffalo River I believe it’s called, that you must traverse to get into the park. It is a drawbridge or Bascule that lifts up to allow tall boats to pass under. I have enjoyed watching many lovely, tall, sailboats and larger vessels pass beneath it every summer. That’s exciting and great fun to watch. This park has great historical significance too. It is also called Freedom Park because it was one terminus of the Underground Railroad and many slaves sought and gained their freedom by making the dangerous crossing of the Niagara River to Canada. As such, it is a Sacred place, a place of Hope. My Only complaint is that sometimes inconsiderate people blast their music from their cars. I Hate that but it doesn’t happen all the time. I suppose there are Rude, obnoxious people everywhere there is access to the public. Bottom line, I Love it here, have been coming here for 45+ years and won’t stop. I have never felt unsafe here and though the police aren’t that often in evidence, there are multiple, obvious cameras posted. There are many light posts so it is pretty brightly lit. I have been here at all hours, even the wee hours of the morning. I highly recommend this lovely little park.
Lots of construction and not always clean, but definitely a good place to get a walk next to the water!
this is truly a hidden gem. This park is the best view of the peace bridge along with access to the Bird Island Pier, which is a walkway directly under the Peace Bridge. The views in this area are beautiful! There is lots of free parking here.
