My family is thrilled with the reopening. There are several great classes to stay fit, with options for many ages and abilities. The prices are very fair. After years of struggling to progress in swimming with classes at other places, my kids now can swim without assistance and dive for rings. The instructors have been amazing.
I am super excited to go to the newly renovated Coleman A. Young Community Recreation Center. This pictures look fantastic! I have not gone yet so I called today for information on the weight room and swimming pool. I spoke to Shedon and she gave an extreme passive aggressive tone as if I were bothering her or wasting her time. She greater me kindly and inquired about the open hours for weight room and she stated M-F 8am -9pm. I then inquired about the weight room having closed sessions scheduled and she, annoyed in tone, and she repeated the hours. I them explained that I was trying to determine if there are classes that are scheduled and in tone as if I were not comprehending she stated they have no classes in the weight room. I then asked what the open pool hours were and she stated, again in an annoyed tone, that all of the information is on the website. I felt too uncomfortable to let her know that it's hard to find that information on the website and that I wanted to understand the open hours. I gave up in trying to have a civilized conversation and told her thank you and that I hoped she had a better day. She scoffed defiantly and stated she is having an excellent day and that I have blessed one. She definitely needs customer service training because she was borderline hostile and definitely acted annoyed. I am not implying harsh action, I'm just thinking we need to encourage and support our city employees to be empathetic when engaging and not defensive. I am certain they probably get a lot callers that can be challenge but they shouldn't be so quick to have that mentality.
Great place to work out, swim, box, or even enjoy a game of pool. This center has it att. Elderly and kids encouraged to check it out! Classes available as well for all ages. Great for the community
Disappointing Experience – Doesn’t Feel Like a True Community Rec Center I’ve given this rec center more than enough chances, but it’s clear it’s not truly here for the community. The overall vibe doesn’t feel welcoming or community-oriented—it’s more like a building with rules that shift depending on who’s working. Several of the water fountains haven’t worked in months, which is unacceptable, especially during the summer or after a workout. On top of that, the A/C barely functions on the top floor, making it nearly unbearable for any kind of real activity up there. Another major issue is the constant inconsistency—whether it’s the hours of operation, the programs offered, or even basic access to the gym. The gym has been closed a full hour before its posted schedule multiple times, without warning or any communication. It’s frustrating to show up expecting to use the facility only to be told it’s closed early “just because.” If this place wants to claim it serves the community, it needs to start operating with more transparency, reliability, and basic respect for the people who use it.
